Backrooms: please leave some rooms unexplained

The doorway is the hook. Explaining everything behind it could be the mistake.

Putting the entrance beneath a furniture showroom is an excellent choice. Upstairs, rooms are arranged to suggest a life you might want. Downstairs, the idea of a room becomes something you cannot trust. That contrast is more interesting than mere emptiness.

The challenge for this premise is scale. A strange space can unsettle without telling us its entire history. Expanding it into a feature risks treating every unanswered question as a gap to fill. Sometimes the gap is the attraction.

The best version of this idea would let familiar architecture become subtly unusable: a room that offers no sensible place to stand, a route that refuses to feel like progress. It does not need a museum label explaining why it is frightening.

A24’s premise offers a strong visual starting point. The reservation is whether a longer narrative will trust that strangeness. This is a review of the published premise and its possibilities, not a claim to have watched the finished film.
