The Buffalo Hunter Hunter: the archive has an appetite

Etsy’s first response to the recovered diary is an opportunity for her career. That is a much better introduction than a neutral scholar dutifully uncovering history. The person carrying the story to us has something to gain from it.

Her dismissive speculation about the worker who found the journal immediately complicates her authority. She imagines his carelessness while depending on his discovery. That little imbalance does more to establish an uneasy narrator than a page of warnings about unreliable testimony would.

The fragile document is another strong choice. Its ink is eating the paper; preserving the words becomes a physical problem. History is both valuable and vulnerable, and the people handling it bring their own motives.

The opening spends considerable time on the mechanics of access, which may frustrate a reader waiting for the vampire. But the delay has a purpose: it makes possession of the story part of the tension. This is a review of the publisher’s opening excerpt, not a verdict on the entire novel.
