Mazywood’s opening: a wish with dirt on its shoes

The best detail in this opening is a practical one: Mazelle dresses for climbing and crawling. Her faith in an enchanted place exists alongside chores, getting dirty, and being home on time. That makes the magic feel close enough to touch.

The rules of the wishing pool are familiar fairy-tale machinery, but Due gives them the authority of playground knowledge. Children disagree about what is true. Mazelle prepares as carefully as someone following a recipe. The suspense comes from the distance between that preparation and what she fails to notice.

There is a small cost to the explicit warning about wishes. It tells the reader very clearly which direction danger will come from. Still, the child’s determination keeps the scene from becoming only a demonstration of a rule.
