Undertone: the sound is the invitation

A paranormal podcast is a good home for a haunting because listening is already an act of participation. The host has to pay attention; the audience has agreed to do the same. Undertone’s premise makes that shared obligation feel like a trap.

That is more appealing than another investigation built around someone entering a clearly terrible house. Curiosity does the work here. Replaying a recording is reasonable, almost automatic, until the replay becomes the dangerous decision.

The risk is over-explanation. Once a story gives its mysterious sound a neat identity and a tidy rulebook, listening can become homework. This pitch is most interesting while an ordinary noise might still be ordinary. The uncertainty deserves room.

The verdict on the premise: a sharp, intimate invitation. Whether the finished film preserves that restraint is a separate question. This is criticism of A24’s published premise, not a viewing review or a score for the film.
