The Sexy Brutale: rescue from the wings
The Sexy Brutale puts murder inside a masquerade and makes its rescuer work from outside the room. Attention is more useful here than a dramatic entrance.
Whimsical Woes editorial ·
The Sexy Brutale gives its rescuer an awkward place at the party: keeping out of the way. Inside the casino mansion, a masquerade repeats while staff murder the guests. This grisly arrangement has little use for a dramatic entrance. Helping starts with noticing what happens around somebody. The rescue depends on attention before it can depend on action.
This review concerns the core design of the original 2017 PC game by Cavalier Game Studios and Tequila Works. It approaches the work as a macabre puzzle mystery, and does not assess the technical performance of later console ports.
Helping starts on the other side of the door
The mask curse prevents Lafcadio Boone from simply sharing rooms with the other characters. As the Griffiths brothers explain, investigation depends on spying without being seen and assembling events across repeated days. That restriction gives rescue an interesting shape. You cannot assume that reaching the endangered person is enough. You need to understand the circumstances surrounding them.
Narrative director James Griffiths describes the mansion’s density in terms of different things happening in the same room at different times. That is a stronger architectural idea than simply adding more corridors. A floor plan tells you where a place is; it cannot tell you what the place is doing. Returning therefore has a purpose beyond checking whether you missed an object. A familiar room can become new evidence without acquiring another door.
A mask can reveal a person
The first rescue supplies a particularly tidy example. Reginald Sixpence is the mansion’s clockmaker; saving him grants powers through his clockwork mask and stopwatch. His occupation is connected to what the player can subsequently do. At a party built around covering faces, a mask becomes a way of making somebody’s role legible. The costume does more than announce that this is an eccentric person with an excellent invitation. It carries useful information about his relationship to the house.
The performance needs its choreography
Design director Charles Griffiths describes music scored to the second against the characters’ actions, with videos supplied to the musicians. This is where the theatrical comparison becomes useful. The room is not just a decorated container for a puzzle: movement and music help give it a performance. A location’s identity can reside in a sequence, not merely in the things an artist puts on its walls.
For a drawing exercise, borrow that distinction. Sketch the same room at three moments and let the movement of one figure change its meaning. Keep the furniture. Change who has arrived, who has left, and what their positions imply. The useful lesson is composition across time, rather than adding more sinister decoration to a single image.
There is a cost to connecting rescued guests with new abilities. A player can begin to regard a person as the next useful unlock. Repetition can also turn a dreadful event into an appointment to manage. These are risks of the structure, not proof that its characters lack value. Readers wanting freely improvised conversations may find observation a restrictive way to care.
Choose this for a murder mystery interested in how help happens. Our Unavowed and Ib reviews consider other relationships between people and strange spaces. The Sexy Brutale’s particular strength is giving the rescuer important work to do before entering the picture.
Questions from the crypt
Is The Sexy Brutale a conventional survival-horror game?
It is better approached as a macabre investigation built around observation and puzzle solving. This review recommends that structure rather than promising sustained chase-based fear. Grisly murders are still central to the premise; its mystery emphasis does not make it a gentle party game.
Can Boone simply enter a room and warn the guests?
The developers describe a mask curse that prevents ordinary room sharing with the other characters. Learning how to save them requires observing without being seen and piecing together their movements. Direct conversation is not the straightforward shortcut that the premise might suggest.
What does saving Reginald Sixpence change?
The developers identify Sixpence as the mansion’s clockmaker. His rescue grants powers through his clockwork mask and stopwatch, allowing time manipulation that expands Boone’s options. This is an early progression example; the later identities and resolutions are left unspoiled here.
